It was the greatest pleasure to chair an invitation-only roundtable discussion with Olivier Blanchard at the AIM Summit this week in London Gulf Analytica, David Gibson-Moore, Financial Advisory, Business Advisory Firm, Business Advisory Consultant, Busin

Blanchard has been at the forefront of global economic thought for over three decades and is currently one of the most influential voices in financial markets. From 2008 to 2015, he served as chief economist and director of the research department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where he worked with a wide range of nations and international organizations. He is currently Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Robert Solow Professor Emeritus at MIT.

We had a most thought-provoking conversation delving into many of the key challenges and opportunities in today's economic landscape. We discussed in depth the multiple challenges faced by governments trying to strike a balance between employing fiscal stimulus to support economic growth and ensuring that debt levels remain sustainable in the long run. We debated fiscal policy in relation to alleviating poverty and inequality and the challenges posed by aging populations as well as climate adaptation and mitigation.

We explored how Keynesian models could not be used to determine policy when the concept of rational expectations was introduced. Long-lasting deviations of output from the natural level of output could no longer be explained and the implementation of economic policy had to be redesigned using the tools of game theory.

Blanchard's insights were invaluable, shedding light on some of the most important and pressing policy issues today and sharing some suggestions for the path forward for today’s economies. Thank you, Olivier Blanchard and all the participants, for contributing to a most stimulating and informative session.
