What began as an economic acronym then became a global reality: BRICS, multipolarity and the search for balance in a world that refuses to stand still.
 
It will be a privilege to chair a roundtable discussion with Jim O’Neill, Baron O'Neill of Gatley, the distinguished economist and former Goldman Sachs executive who subsequently served as UK Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, at the upcoming Dubai AIM Summit on Thursday, 23 October.

This exclusive, invitation-only event will focus on “Geopolitics and Markets in an Age of Multipolarity” and, it is fair to say, that few economists have influenced the global conversation in quite the same way as Jim O’Neill. From initially coining the term BRICS as a concept to redefine how investors should view emerging markets, his insights have framed debates for more than two decades. This concept not only anticipated the rise of new economic powerhouses but, indirectly, lead to the BRICS group itself becoming a major political force in the last two decades building on the desire to create a counterweight to Western influence in global institutions.

We will examine the relationship between the Global South and the BRICS group which are often viewed as complementary and rooted in South-South cooperation. We will also have the opportunity to explore related developments in today’s world: the rise of BRICS+, the evolving Russia–China axis, the implications of a multipolar global economy and the growing influence of new regional power centres such as the GCC, ASEAN, and Africa. It should be a fascinating conversation.

The Dubai AIM Summit will take place on 22–23 October 2025 and will be an opportunity to network and connect with over 800 leaders from sovereign wealth funds, family offices and top fund managers.
