It was a privilege to join the Ashante Kingdom of Ghana Delegation last week on a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta. The engagement proved both cordial and highly productive.

Our delegation was led by His Royal Highness Oheneba Yaw Otchere, Royal Prince of the Ashante Kingdom who was accompanied by Henrietta A. Tettah, Ghana Chargé d'Affaires, Evans Amoah Nyamekye, Special Legal Advisor to the Ashanti Investment Trust, Peter Kwasi Dadzie, Secretary of the Ashanti Investment Trust and myself, as Senior Advisor to the Ashanti Investment Trust.

Professor Edward Scicluna, Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, was accompanied by the Deputy Governor Mr Alexander Demarco and other officials from both the Central Bank and the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.

Malta and Ghana have recently expanded their ties through the opening of Malta’s High Commission in Accra and the creation of a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation in 2023. High-level visits, including the Maltese President’s 2024 state visit, have subsequently reinforced agreements in education, fisheries, tourism, agriculture, financial services and pharmaceuticals.

These efforts have delivered concrete results ranging from Ghanaian students securing scholarships at the University of Malta to professional training for central bank staff and regulators. Trade cooperation continues to expand and, taken together, these initiatives continue to develop the relationship between the two counties.

The meeting, held at the Governor's Office, provided a platform for a most productive discussion on additional ways that Ghana and Malta can further deepen their collaboration.
