I was deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of Mark Mobius, a figure whose influence on global investing cannot be overstated.
At a time when the phrase “emerging markets” was barely understood, let alone embraced, Mark was already travelling across Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe identifying investment opportunities. Through his long tenure at Franklin Templeton and subsequently at Mobius Investments, he helped institutionalise emerging market investing as a recognised and essential asset class. Today, billions of dollars flow into these markets as a matter of course. Much of that can be traced back to his conviction and willingness to go where others would not.
What stood out to me over the years of knowing Mark was his intellectual curiosity and his extraordinary energy. He was not an investor who sat behind a desk. He was constantly on the ground, meeting policymakers, entrepreneurs and families, always seeking to understand the underlying reality of a market rather than relying on second-hand narratives. Long before it became fashionable, he practised what we now call “boots on the ground” investing.
In many respects, he helped shape not just a sector but a mindset. He encouraged a generation of investors to think globally and to recognise that growth and innovation often emerge from unexpected places. For those of us who operate across the GCC and ASEAN today, this perspective feels almost second nature. It is worth remembering that pioneers like Mark made it so.
I had the privilege of counting Mark as a great friend, and what struck me most was his generosity and insight. Conversations with Mark were never superficial. I will remember him not only as a legendary investor but as a gracious and engaging mentor and companion.
A life truly well lived. Rest in peace, Mark Mobius.
